Your NYU NetID and associated password function as the gateway to a variety of services across the University, including NYUHome, your NYU Email, and NYU Classes. All NYU faculty and staff members, as well as students enrolled in degree or diploma programs, are provided with an NYU NetID (Network IDentification). Your NetID is a combination of your initials and a few numbers, e.g., aqe123, and is usually printed on the back of your NYUCard. It is different from your University ID, which is also printed on your NYUCard, but is a longer string of numbers and starts with an "N".

Once activated, your NetID provides access to authorized NYU online services and applications via desktop computers, laptops, and mobile devices, including end user devices such as laptops. Your NetID is also used to create your default NYU Email address(e.g., aqe123@nyu.edu).

CONNECTING your game console, tv, or other media device
Step 1. Register your device
1. Connect your device to a ResNet jack using an Ethernet cable. Using your device browser, go to computer.registration. nyu.edu. If connecting wirelessly, or if your device does not have a browser, go to computer.registration.nyu.edu on a computer or smartphone.
2. Login with your NetID and password.
3. Read and accept the terms of the User Agreement by clicking I AGREE.
4. On the following screen, click Register Some Other Device.
5. Find the MAC address of your device, enter it, then click Register. Follow this link if you are unsure of what your MAC address is.

Step 2. Connect your registered device to the Internet
1. If you are using the wired ResNet network, plug your device into the ResNet jack via Ethernet cable.
2. If you are connecting wirelessly, select nyu-media in your device’s list of available wireless networks, then enter the shared password that was provided to you by your Resident Assistant (Connect*nyuhousing2019).
Connecting to the 'nyuguest' network
"nyuguest" is a wireless network made available for NYU guests and visitors who do not have an NYU NetID and thus cannot connect to the regular NYURoam "nyu" SSID. If you are an NYU community member, you should always connect to that network instead of requesting guest access. "nyuguest" is designed for short-term visitors or events. Sponsors should obtain affiliate NetIDs for longer-term guests and contractors.

Instructions for faculty and staff who will be hosting guests

Full-time NYU faculty or administrator who will be hosting a guest or group of guests who will need wireless Internet access can request a guest ID/password from your locally designated departmental or school representative. (These representatives change too frequently to list here; please speak with your area's administrative staff for current details.)
If there is no departmental contact for your area, full-time NYU faculty and administrators can request "nyuguest" access for their guests by contacting the IT Service Desk.

Instructions for guests to connect to the nyuguest network

If you are a guest at NYU and have been provided an "nyuguest" ID and password, following the below instructions to connect.
  1. On your device or laptop, in the list of available wireless networks, select nyuguest; no encryption or authentication is required at this point.
  2. Open a web browser and go to any web page. The browser will be automatically redirected to the nyuguest login page.
  3. Log in with provided guest ID and password. (NYU NetIDs and passwords will not work for this service.)
Note: If you are a guest and have not been provided with login credentials, please ask the NYU faculty or administrator that is sponsoring your visit to follow the instructions in the above section. In addition, nyuguest IDs and credentials only work for a short period of time. If the ones you are given expire during your visit, ask your sponsor to obtain a new one by following the instructions in the above section.
The NYURoam 'nyu' network is the primary wireless network at NYU. Follow the instructions below to configure your device to connect to NYURoam. If you plan to access NYURoam immediately after configuring your connection, make sure you are in an NYURoam-enabled location

Troubleshooting tips
  • Note that if you just set or reset your NetID password at the NYU Start page, you may need to wait up to two hours before you will be able to connect to NYURoam.
  • If after completing the above instructions you are unable to connect at an NYURoam-enabled location, return to step 2a and change the Network Name to nyu-legacy instead of nyu, then repeat the rest of the steps to join that network instead.

    • For Username and Password, enter your NetID and Password.
  6. Click Save and, if you are in an NYURoam wireless-enabled location, you will be connected to the wireless network.
Troubleshooting connection or reception problems
  1. Confirm that you have followed the correct steps to configure NYURoam wireless access for your device.
  2. Make sure you are in an official NYU location; NYURoam wireless access is not supported outside of these locations (e.g., in parks or streets). See this article for a list of locations.
  3. Check to make sure that Wi-Fi/wireless is turned on for your laptop or device.
  4. Move your computer/device a few feet in any direction. Move away from large metal or masonry obstructions (shelves, walls, etc.).
  5. Confirm that your computer or device's clock is displaying the correct time and time zone; if not, update them to the correct time and time zone.
  6. Make sure that you are logging in with a current NetID and password. An old password may be saved on your computer/device if you changed it recently. Note: If you just reset your NetID/NYUHome password, you may have to wait up to two hours before you can log into NYURoam wireless.
  7. Test your account to see if your account is working properly by logging into NYUHome with your NetID and password. If not, check the NYU Start Page to see if your password has expired and if so, reset it. Note: You may have to wait up to four hours after resetting your password before you can log into NYURoam wireless.
  8. When in doubt, restart or reset:
    1. If you can not connect to NYURoam, but you think you have configured your device correctly, simply turn wifi off and then on and/or restart your computer or device to see if it solves the problem.

    2. If you are experience speed or connectivity issues when using an Apple device to connect to NYURoam wireless, it may be connecting to an inappropriate wireless network or having adverse affects from a recent OS upgrade. Ensure that your Apple device is configured to only use the 'nyu' network and not 'nyu-legacy,' 'eduroam,' or an NYU guest network.

NYU IT recommends that you erase ALL information regarding all wireless network configurations (both NYU and non-NYU) from your device and start fresh with just the 'nyu' network. To do so on an iOS device, open Settings on your device then select General > Reset> Reset Network Settings, then follow these instructions to configure your iOS device to connect to 'nyu'.

In general, NYU IT strongly recommends that you wait to install major software updates on your Apple equipment until a month or so after the release date unless it relates to a security vulnerability. This will allow Apple to address any problems introduced with the new code release.
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, or you need assistance with any of them, contact the IT Service Desk, open 24x7.
Advanced troubleshootingIf you feel comfortable with more advanced technical troubleshooting, you may wish to try the following:
  1. Update your WLAN (wireless card) drivers.
  2. If using Microsoft Windows, flush the DNS cache. To do so, select Start then Run, type cmd- in the command prompt, then type ipconfig /flushdns. When complete, try reconnecting to NYURoam.
  3. If you have firewall, antivirus, or P2P (peer to peer) software enabled, or are using a non-Windows wireless connection applications (e.g., Intel proset wireless): Disable this/these applications and try connecting again. If you are able to connect, one of those software applications is likely causing the issue. If your anti-virus program appears to be the root of the issue, consider uninstalling it and switching to the NYU-licensed version of Symantec Endpoint Protection available through the NYUHome Ask IT Software channel. If not, be sure to immediately re-enable any anti-virus software you temporarily disabled.
Need further assistance? The NYU IT Service Desk is available 24 x 7 x 365 to answer questions about connecting to ResNet and NYURoam wireless as well as any other question you might have about NYU IT Services.
